How to Use Articles in the Sentences | Rules of Using Articles

Articles (a, an, the) are small words used before nouns to define them as specific or general. “A” and “an” are indefinite articles used for non-specific nouns, while “the” is a definite article used for specific nouns. Articles help in making sentences clear and precise.

1. Indefinite Articles (A, An)

Used before singular, non-specific nouns.

“A” is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.

Example: I saw a dog.

“An” is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

Example: She ate an apple.

2. Definite Article (The)

Used before specific or previously mentioned nouns.

Example: I saw a cat. The cat was sleeping.

Used before unique things.

Example: The sun rises in the east.

Used before superlatives.

Example: This is the best book I have read.

3. No Article (Zero Article)

Used for general plural or uncountable nouns.

Example: I love reading books. (Not the books)

Used for names of languages, subjects, and meals.

Example: She speaks English. (Not the English)
